What changed in 2026
From 1 April 2026, FSSAI raised the turnover limits. Many small businesses that needed a State Licence now need only Basic Registration. Registrations and licences issued from that date also stay valid with no fixed expiry, so you no longer renew every one to five years. You still have to follow the rules, keep your details up to date on FoSCoS, and file any annual return that applies to your category.
Do home bakers and tiffin services need FSSAI?
Yes. Anyone who sells food, including from home, needs at least Basic Registration. For most home businesses it costs ₹100 a year and needs only a photo, ID and address proof.
Is FSSAI registration mandatory for small businesses?
Yes. Every food business needs at least Basic Registration, including home kitchens, hawkers and online sellers. Running without one can lead to a fine.
What is the turnover limit for FSSAI Basic Registration in 2026?
Up to ₹1.5 crore a year, from 1 April 2026. Earlier it was ₹12 lakh.
How much does FSSAI registration cost?
The government fee for Basic Registration is ₹100 a year. A State Licence is ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 a year depending on activity, and a Central Licence is ₹7,500 a year. Check the exact fee on FoSCoS when you pay.
Do I need to renew my FSSAI licence?
Registrations and licences issued on or after 1 April 2026 have no fixed expiry, so you do not need to renew them. If yours was issued earlier with an expiry date, check its status on FoSCoS before that date.
Do I need a separate FSSAI number for Amazon or Swiggy?
You need your own registration or licence for each kitchen, factory or warehouse. Marketplaces ask for that 14-digit number when you list food.

Only on the official portal, foscos.fssai.gov.in. Be careful of look-alike websites that charge high fees.
