What must be on an FSSAI food label?
Under the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, a packed food label needs:
- The name of the food, showing what it really is
- A list of ingredients in descending order of weight, with additives by class name and INS number
- Allergen declaration (gluten cereals, crustaceans, milk, egg, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, sulphite)
- Nutrition table per 100 g or 100 ml, and per serve with %RDA, unless exempt
- The veg mark (green circle in a green square) or the non-veg mark (brown triangle in a brown square)
- Name and full address of the manufacturer or packer
- The FSSAI logo and 14-digit licence or registration number
- Net quantity, MRP inclusive of all taxes, and unit sale price
- Lot or batch number
- Date of manufacture or packing, and the "Use by" or expiry date ("Best before" is optional)
- Consumer care details (phone or email), and the country of origin for imported food
- Storage instructions and how to use, where needed
%RDA per serve is based on an adult's daily 2,000 kcal energy, 67 g total fat, 22 g saturated fat, 2 g trans fat, 50 g added sugar and 2,000 mg sodium.
Is the nutrition table mandatory on FSSAI labels?
For most packed foods, yes: per 100 g or 100 ml, plus per serve with %RDA. A few foods are exempt, such as single-ingredient unprocessed foods. Check the exemption list in the 2020 regulations for your product.
Is "Best before" enough on an FSSAI label?
No. The 2020 regulations require the date of manufacture or packing and the "Use by" or expiry date. "Best before" can be added as extra information.
How do I calculate nutrition facts for my product?
Weigh each ingredient in one batch and add up their nutrients, then divide by the finished weight. This tool does that with standard food tables. For exact values, send a sample to an NABL-accredited food lab.
Can I print the label at home?
Yes. Use "Print / save PDF" and choose your label size, or print on sticker sheets. For many packs, send the PDF to a local label printer.
